What is local SEO?
A complete definition, every ranking factor Google uses, and the practical steps a small business actually takes to rank.
Local SEO (local search engine optimization) is the practice of improving a business's visibility in Google Maps and location-based searches like "near me." It works by optimizing your Google Business Profile, earning local reviews and citations, and adding location signals to your website — so Google shows your business to nearby customers who are ready to buy.
Local SEO is the practice of optimizing a business so it appears in Google's Local Pack (the three map-style results at the top of search) and on Google Maps for searches with local intent — like "dentist near me", "plumber Austin", or "best coffee shop in Brooklyn."
It's distinct from regular SEO because Google uses an entirely different ranking algorithm for local results, driven by three factors: relevance, distance, and prominence.
The three local ranking factors (per Google)
Google's own documentation states that local rankings are decided by these three factors, in roughly equal weight:
1. Relevance
How well your business matches what someone searched for. A pediatric dentist is more relevant for "pediatric dentist near me" than a general dentist, even if the general dentist is closer. Relevance is determined primarily by your Google Business Profile categories (primary + secondary), services list, and what your website says you do.
2. Distance
How far the business is from the searcher's location (or the location they specified in their search). Distance is the most-cited factor by SMB owners but actually has less control than relevance or prominence — you can't move your business.
3. Prominence
How well-known the business is, online and offline. Driven by: quantity, quality, and recency of Google reviews, links from authoritative local sources (chamber of commerce, news articles, directories), and consistent NAP (Name, Address, Phone) across the web.
What local SEO is NOT
- Not the same as regular SEO. A site can rank #1 nationally for "best dentist" and still not appear in the Local Pack for "dentist Austin" if its Google Business Profile is incomplete.
- Not just about your website. The Local Pack is dominated by Google Business Profile signals, off-site citations, and reviews — your website is one of several factors, not the only one.
- Not a one-time fix. Local rankings reward consistent activity. A "perfect" profile that hasn't been updated in a year underperforms an imperfect profile that gets a new photo and a new post every week.
What "the Local Pack" means
When you search Google for something with local intent — "coffee shop", "plumber near me", "emergency dentist" — Google shows a map with three business results pinned above the normal blue-link search results. That box is called the Local Pack (or "Map Pack" or "3-Pack"). Appearing in those three positions captures ~44% of all clicks from a local search. Positions 4–10 (visible after the "More Places" link) get most of the rest.
The entire goal of local SEO is to move from "outside the Local Pack" → "in the Local Pack" → "in position #1–#3 of the Local Pack."
How a small business actually does local SEO
The practical work, in priority order:
- Claim and fully fill out your Google Business Profile. Most owners fill 8 of ~30 fields. The remaining 22 are where the ranking gap opens up. (Full GBP checklist.)
- Make your website tell Google where you are. Homepage title tag should include city + service. Add LocalBusiness schema markup. Add a visible NAP block.
- Get recent Google reviews — consistently. Recency matters more than total count. 50 reviews from the last 6 months outranks 200 reviews from 3 years ago.
- Build NAP consistency. Your business name, address, and phone should match exactly across every directory: Yelp, Apple Maps, Facebook, Bing, industry-specific listings.
- Post and add photos regularly. Weekly Google Posts + monthly fresh photos signal "active business" to Google's algorithm.

How long does local SEO take to work?
Foundation fixes (steps 1–2 above) usually move the Local Pack score within 4–8 weeks. Sustained signals (steps 3–5) compound over 3–6 months. There's no "rank #1 in 30 days" — Google's algorithm explicitly resists rapid manipulation. But moving from "invisible" to "visible" usually takes 1–2 months of consistent work.
Do I need an SEO consultant?
Not necessarily. The fixes above are things a non-technical small business owner can do themselves.
